Every year-end we receive the official ISTAT data of the digital technologies spread in Italian families. And every year we realize that we’re yet more analogical than we should have expected and than it should have been desirable and necessary in order to benefit from the digital revolution.

Discouragement. The glass is half, or better said one-third, empty. 36% of the families, do not have yet internet connection, and this is one of the latest places in the European rank. If we look at the glass half full ISTAT says that 57% of Italians (6+ years) use Internet, but it means that 43% don’t use it yet. If we look how many people use internet every day, we see that less than 40% use it daily. In brief, the number of the Italians that don’t use Internet is the same of the total of employed.

Digital gap. The presence of minors in the house is synonymous of presence of Internet (almost 90%), while in the families of over 65s the percentage is 16%. At a geographical level there are 10 percentage point between North Center and South, and the same is for the gender level. Almost 95% of eighteen-year-old use internet while the percentage is less than 25% for over 65s. The categories that use internet the most are executives and students (90%), while the group that use internet the less are retired and housewives.

Move slowly. We cannot yet foresee radical changes. The increasing digital exposure and generational turnover bring an incremental improvement that is incremental but slow (less than 3 percentage points). When we plan new investments for infrastructures and digital services we cannot disregard from these reality.

Digital idol. While a big amount of digital devices is decreasing, as for example digital camera, DVD player, and satellite dishes, the percentage of mobile phones in the Italian families is 95%. The future is and it will be always more mobile, but today almost 55% of mobile phone have internet connection and this percentage will increase during the next years, also thanks to the high replacement rate. In a few years all Italians well be potentially on the web, and, probably, they will become unaware users for the use of some elementary features link to communication.

Memory in the clouds. As in other Countries, but in Italy more, Internet is an instrument of social interaction, entertainment and information. But at the same time almost one users in two has got an experience of purchase on the web. For the first time it has been asked about cloud services (do you ever have use web services in order to save and share documents, pictures and files?). Less than 30% affirmative replies, but the same number do not know what is cloud storage. Actually, what are we doing while using social network?

I don’t see, I don’t hear, I don’t speak. There are a lot of studies which analyses the reasons why the web is not utilized. Factor order changes but the essence is unchanged. Call it lack of appreciation or interest (29%), lack of knowledge (28%), inability to use it (27%) uselessness (24%), these motivations change any time the question is different not as a consequence of real changes.
