The existing concept of Smart City is extending thanks to the outcomes of MyNeighbourhood – MyCity project, sponsored by European Union within the Competiveness and Innovation framework programme, in the neighborhoods of four European cities. The new concept of smart city takes into account not only the technological but also the human perspective in planning and developing sustainable cities, that, indeed, have been renamed “human smart city”.
Myneighbourhood project aims to involve citizens as the main actors of the urban smartness. In such a smart city people do not adopt technologies chosen and acquired from the ICT markets by their municipal governments. The appropriation by citizens of technology solutions, is strongly consequent to people needs and to their ability to develop a solution throughout interactive, dialogic, collaborative processes where the public actor and the ICT private provider are no longer linked by a buyer-seller relationship. In such smart cities new, innovative space for ICT market can be created as deeply rooted in real problems of people, in their urban daily lives, in their commitment to respond to their own needs.
The cities that take part to the project are very different: Aalborg in Danimarca, Birmingham in the UK, Lisbon in Portugal and Quarto Oggiaro in Milan.
At Quarto Oggiaro the project concerns three areas:
– Administration: a network between public administrations, associations, stores, families and schools.
– Co-planning: two projects have been started; “Quarto Food Club” – students from the catering institute have started a elderly people’s home delivery service; “Quarto Gardening” – maintenance and embellishment service offered by students from the Agrarian Institute and citizens;
– QuartoWeb: communication service, it is not only a social network but also permits to geocalize the position of projects and events in order to involve other citizens.
The activities of the neighborhoods can be followed at the platform MyNeighbourhood – MyCity. Other European neighborhoods will take part at the project, in order to extend the connection among people and between people and their places, so that citizens can become co-citizens and co-creators of their cities.
